Buy from the family first.
A listing costs nothing. The directory is worth something only if it is close to complete, and charging at the start guarantees it never gets there.
The listing carries what a buyer actually needs: what you sell, where you are, how to reach you, and the HBCU connection if there is one. It does not carry a rating you cannot see the basis of, or a review count of zero dressed up as new.
Nothing is listed until a real business submits it. Seeding a directory with scraped or invented entries is how these projects lose trust in week one, and a wrong phone number in a directory is worse than no directory.
